Monadnock Beat

Stories from a Bronze-age burial mound excavation with Bob Beck

PETERBOROUGH, NH — Did you ever wonder what it was like to work on an archaeological dig? At the next “Peterborough Presents” lecture, Robert “Bob” Beck will recount his experiences as a novice archaeologist volunteering on an active Bronze-age project in the mountains of Romania. The talk will take place on Tuesday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the 1833 Room at the Peterborough Town Library.

Beck will explain in layman’s terms the reasoning behind the dig, the equipment and personnel resources required, the logistics involved, the various lab techniques used on discovered remains, and the overall goals of the multi-year endeavor. Furthermore, using his own photographs, Bob will highlight a beautiful, relatively unknown region of Europe.

Bob retired to the Monadnock area in August 2020 after a 30+ year career overseas serving in US Embassies in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Bob currently teaches Foreign Policy for Keene State’s Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL). In the summers of 2018, 2019, and 2022 Bob spent timing working on a Bronze-age archaeological dig in the mountains of Romania.  He lives in Peterborough with his wife of 36 years, Meg.
